Great question, the answer is…. we don’t really. In the same way many modern ideas weren’t created as they exist today from scratch – explorers look at history to help shape their understanding of geology in the region, and hopefully build on that.

A massive part of our time is spent researching history: finding out what the old timers were looking at, what they thought, and what they found. Modern explorers can bring new insight, perspective and technology to old ideas.

Gold was first discovered by colonists in Victoria back in 1850, really not long after the first settlers arrived.
